When to Serve Sushi—
Oh, The Possibilities!

Sushi's versatility makes it a staple at every Japanese restaurant.  Sushi can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.  Below are some ideas about when and how to serve sushi.

Appetizers:

Sushi can easily be finger food.  Serve Vegetable sushi during Thanksgiving to highlight a harvest theme.  Don't forget the wasabi or dipping sauce.  Keep frozen sushi in the freezer for an easy to prepare treat.

Dinner:

Sushi comes in many different shapes and sizes, with infinite possibilities for toppings.  From a slice of premium tuna to a sweet fruit roll, sushi is great when serving a variety of dietary preferences.  Whether you are preparing for a large feast or something light, sushi can accommodate your needs.  A simple Tekka Maki (tuna roll) makes a great summer time dish, or when your looking for something light, refreshing and high in protein.  In the winter, when you are looking to chow down on a hearty meal, eat larger rolls accompanied by miso soup and several nigiri pieces.

Lunch:

The balance of protein and carbohydrates makes sushi a great lunch without the trans fat or calories of most fast food.  Sushi will satisfy you throughout the afternoon.  Try a California Roll which contains seafood, vegetables and toasted sesame seeds.  Frozen sushi, when packed as a lunch, defrosts throughout the morning and is ready to eat when you are.

Snacks:

Sushi is often packaged in grab-and-go style packages for an on-the-go snack.  Sushi containing fruit makes a great after school snack for kids, satisfying both their sweet tooth and parents desire to provide a nutritious alternative to chips or crackers.

Formal Events:
When serving sushi for a formal event it is all about the presentation.  Provide your guests with elegantly decorated plates, their own sauce plate and a place to rest their chopsticks.  Delicate, Asian style table settings can also contribute to the theme.

Casual Events:

For more casual events, sushi can be served buffet style or on large communal plates shared by a group of people.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the many possibilities sushi has to offer.  Use your imagination and sushi will take you wherever you want to go, and with the convenience of frozen, it's always just a few minutes away.  For more information about different sushi styles and varieties, or check out Sushi University.
